The Elizabeth Hursh Story

Elizabeth Brown Hursh and her family were the first permanent settlers in Isabella County although the Chippewa Indian Tribe had hunted and summered in the area for hundreds of years.

In February 1855 Elizabeth, her husband John, and their 6 children arrived in what is now Isabella County, Michigan.

This booklet tells the story of their journey and life in Michigan. The story is written from interviews and Isabella County documents.

Proceeds from this book will be put towards a permanent marker for Elizabeth Hursh's grave.

Booklets are available in the Administration Office of the Isabella County Building.

A Memorial Tribute to the Isabella County Judiciary
As part of the sesquicentennial celebration five conference rooms were dedicated to deceased judges who have served Isabella County over the last fifty years.

Those to be honored are Circuit Judges Donald Holbrook, Sr., Donald Holbrook, Jr., Robert Campbell, and Paul O’Connell and Probate judges Burke McClintic and David Burrows.

While many have served as judges in Isabella County over its one hundred and fifty years, it was within the last fifty years that Isabella County began emerging as a separate judicial entity. Through much of her history Isabella county shared judges with a number of neighboring jurisdictions (Clare, Mecosta, Gratiot, Midland and Gladwin at various times).

Those recognized represent the leadership in the emergence of a strong, fair and vibrant judiciary in this county. A ceremony officially naming the conference rooms in the County Court Building on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 4:30. The public is invited.
