Weekly crop report for August 19, 2010
Paul Gross, Isabella County MSU Extension
Commodity Reports
The corn crop has progressed ahead of normal with the warm temperatures over the past two weeks. Early planted fields are fully dented and in early dough stage. We expect harvest of corn silage to begin in a week to ten days. We have seen some western bean cutworm feeding in later planted fields. We are approaching the time when a stalk nitrate test can be taken to evaluate your nitrogen program. Contact the Extension office for more information on taking these tests.
Soybeans are in growth stage R-5 and progressing nicely with the recent rains. There are still several pests feeding on the leaves but the levels are below threshold. There seems to be an increase in the numbers of soybean aphids over the past two weeks. We have also seen some spider mites in a few fields along the edges. Disease pressure is low at this time. Continue to scout fields for problems.
Wheat harvest was wrapped up over the past weeks. Most growers were satisfied with yields. Most are concerned with the disease and sprout issues in the white wheat crop the past couple of years. Some are considering growing more red wheat. The price spike in the past few weeks will increase the planted acres this fall. Now is a good to evaluate variety trials and select high yielding disease resistant varieties.
Harvest of third cutting alfalfa is wrapping up for growers on the aggressive cutting schedules. This has been a very good year for yield and quality for chopping hay. We are seeing near threshold levels of leafhoppers in some fields. Cutting should manage this pest. Many of the summer seedings have been planted.
Harvest of oats and barley is complete. Most are reporting average yields and quality.
Drybeans are filling pods and progressing. We have some very good looking fields and some stands that were hurt by all the rains after emergence. Most fields have been treated for western bean cutworm.
