The County Drain Commissioner is elected every four years.
The department operates under Michigan Public Act No. 1956 as amended, with a budget appropriated by the Board of Commissioners from the general fund of the County.
The Citizens Guide to Drain Code
Some of the duties and functions of the Drain Commissioner:
- Is responsible for the construction, maintenance, and inspection of
County Drains and streams as designated by the drain code.
- Investigates complaints relative to established County Drains.
- Determines and spreads drain assessments.
- Secures right-of-way easements for County Drains.
- Sets percent and provides for public review for affected landowners
and units of government for drain assessments where proceedings require it.
- Inspects and approves the construction and maintenance of County Drains.
- Represents county drainage districts in any court proceedings.
- Issue permits to cross or parallel a County Drain.
- Quotes pay off information on Drain Assessments.
- Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control Applications and Permits (fee
charged)
- Provides Board of Public Works Information.
- Storm Water Plan Review Application (fee charged).
