A juvenile offender is someone under the age of 17 that is charged with a crime.  The process through which a juvenile is prosecuted is similar to that of an adult but uses slightly different terminology.

1. A crime is committed.

2. A petition is filed.  (This is similar to an adult complaint.)

3. The intake department then decides whether a formal or informal intervention will take place with the juvenile.

Informal

4. At this point, the Probate Court can refer the juvenile to a Diversion Program rather than formally handling the petition.

Formal
4. Pre-Trial Conference
5. Adjudication
6. Dispositional Hearing
