Press Release - Fatal Car/Pedestrian Traffic Crash - May 21, 2013

The Isabella County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a fatal car/pedestrian traffic crash that occurred on west M-20, just west of Sherman Rd. A vehicle had stopped with its hazards on and called 911 in reference to a deer that way lying dead in the road. Jaremy Stiles had pulled up behind the vehicle that was calling 911 to see if they needed help. He turned his lights off and walked up to talk to the driver of the other vehicle. When he was told about the dead deer, he began returning to his car. With on-coming traffic approaching, he walked to the rear of his car. At the same time, a pickup driven by Randall Neeland was approaching, saw the deer but not the cars and drove to the right to miss running over the deer. At the last second he saw Jaremy Stiles and swerved to the right into a ditch. Mr. Stiles apparently feared he was going to be hit if he stayed where he was, so he ran towards the ditch. He ended up running into the path of the pickup and was run over. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Isabella County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by Michigan State Police, Millbrook-Rolland Fire Department and Mobile Medical Response (MMR).

The accident remains under investigation by the Isabella County Sheriff’s Department.
