Voting for candidates running for state and local races is as important as voting for the “top of the ticket” candidates. Often, however, voters are unaware of the duties of the occupants of those elected offices. Here is a brief description of some of Isabella County’s elected offices.
Isabella County Clerk: chief election official of the County; issues marriage licenses, birth and death certificates, concealed weapons permits, military discharge orders, notary public commissions, assumed name certificates, numerous other duties.
Isabella County Treasurer: responsible for property tax, foreclosures, parcel information, dog licensing, as well as other treasury related services
Isabella County Register of Deeds: official recording office for all land records in the County
Isabella County Drain Commission: administer laws involving flood protection, stormwater management, and soil erosion
Isabella County Road Commission: ensure steady and safe traffic patterns; gravel road upkeep; road and bridge construction, repair and maintenance; snow removal, salting and sanding; maintain road signage; control roadside vegetation; other duties.
Isabella County Commission: responsible for development and administration of the annual budget; approve all contracts, grant agreements, and personnel procedures and matters, including collective bargaining agreements
Mt Pleasant City Commission: The City Charter provides for a “Commission-Manager Plan”. The Commission is responsible for establishing policies to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of the community. Primary duties: hiring a city manager, approving an annual budget, passing and updating ordinances
Union Township Clerk: keeps voter registration file and conducts elections, maintains custody of all township records, records and maintains township meeting minutes, maintains general ledger, other duties
Union Township Trustee: responsible for township’s fiduciary health, other duties as assigned
School Board: represents the community in setting policy for the school district
