Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion Volunteer Programs taps the skills, talents and experience of individuals who are at least 55, on a limited income and looking to fulfill their purpose. Foster Grandparent volunteers serve in schools, day care centers and preschools, providing academic, social and emotional support to help students reach their full potential. They foster positive relationships with students and children through encouragement, empathy, and kindness. Senior Companion volunteers help older adults live independently. They provide assistance with important daily tasks; encouragement to remain active; to notice when someone may need extra care and easing of loneliness. Without the help of Senior Companions, many Older Adults would not be able to continue living at home. Many of our volunteers also serves in nursing homes, adult day care centered and sheltered workshops.

Governor’s Service Award for Older Adult of the Year!

A special congratulations to Isabella County Foster Grandparent volunteer Eleanor Lopez won the Governor’s Service award for Older Adult Volunteer of the Year. Eleanor first started volunteering with the AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent program in 2009. Since then, she has served over 15,000 hours. Eleanor serves at Victory Child Care and Learning Center in Mt. Pleasant, where she is known as “Grandma Eleanor”. She isn’t afraid to get down to the children’s level, listen to them, and join in their activities. The trust Eleanor builds with the students she serves with allows them increase their social-emotional skills, motor cognition, and language development skills. Eleanor has also served on the Foster Grandparent/Senior Companion advisory board, where she shared ideas on how to enhance the programs. In addition, Eleanor also served over 1,000 hours with the Isabella County Commission on Aging Gold Key volunteer program. She would ride the public transportation during peak school hours to ensure children were safe as they traveled to and from school. Throughout her volunteering career, Eleanor has taken the time to make sure children in her community are supported, and loved. We are blessed to have her serve with our volunteer programs at Isabella County Commission on Aging, and we couldn’t be prouder of Eleanor and the love she gives to students in our community!
